Real Bali Wedding: Scarlett and Jai's Modern Tropical Bali Wedding in Canggu | The Bali Bride, Bali Wedding Directory

Is there anything more romantic than a couple of high-school sweethearts tying the knot? Scarlett & Jai’s beautiful Bali wedding in Canggu was a truly personalised celebration, representing their shared love for holidays, travel and adventure alongside a handful of their closest friends and family.

After a long-awaited (and incredibly sweet!) proposal, Scarlett and Jai quickly made the decision to celebrate their nuptials in magical Bali – wanting to create a less-traditional, informal and seriously fun celebration for their big day. And with just 7 months to plan, these guys were lucky enough to have the best of the best when it came to their Bali wedding dream team!

Set at the dreamy Arnalaya Beach House in Canggu, Scarlett and Jai were inspired by modern, minimal settings featuring fresh whites and greens, subtle tropical accents and clean geometric lines. Bali wedding planner and stylist extraordinaire Anastasia from Wonderland Bali Events helped to create their dream celebration from beginning to end, bringing Scarlett & Jai’s wedding vision to life with stunning details at every turn.

Decked out with contemporary furniture from the Bali Event Hire range, a picturesque poolside ceremony setting was complete with timber bench seats, asymmetrical white frames, hanging Edison bulbs and geometric lanterns. Lush foliage and sweet aisle arrangements from the Wonderland team helped to tie the look together, as Scarlett & Jai exchanged vows against an incredible ocean backdrop.

White tents lined the lawn for a relaxed cocktail reception, with woven basket lights and sleek cocktail furniture in fresh white and timber tones. A statement bar became the hub of activity, with personalised cocktails designed by the incredible Saigon Street Catering. One of our Bali wedding catering faves, these guys were also responsible for the delicious canapes that Scarlett and Jai say guests are still raving about to this day!

With the Terralogical team there to capture every detail through candid, emotive imagery, we are so excited to share more from Scarlett and Jai’s modern tropical Bali wedding below. Keep reading for all of the stunning snaps, along with some destination wedding planning tips and advice from the newlyweds!

How we met: We met in High School in Year 9 (2006)

The proposal: It was a casual early Sunday morning stroll along our local beach just the two of us and Indi. Walking along for about 20 minutes when we bent down to look at some shells in the sand. As I got up to walk off Jai called me back with ‘Look what I found’. He was down on one knee holding his hands out with a small squared shaped box. It didn’t quite click to me what was going on until Jai stuttered “Will you Marry Me?” Without hesitation there was a YES! and the tears of joy started flowing!

This was a long awaited moment and a complete surprise. Jai was so nervous that he had got down twice behind my back and got back up without me realizing until he felt it was the right moment. He had already picked out my ring on his own and I had no idea. I always thought I would know exactly when he was going to propose but it was a total surprise and the most exciting, happy time of my life. After waiting 9 ½ years for this moment, It was only a week later we had the date set and we were planning our Bali wedding for 7 months time.

Wedding date: 20/06/2018

Wedding Ceremony Venue: Arnalaya Beach House, Canggu

Wedding Reception Venue: Arnalaya Beach House, Canggu

Total Guests: 50

Our style/Inspiration: We wanted a modern and minimal style with a touch of geometric clean lines. Colours were only pops of white and natural greenery. We had a simple, relaxed and slight tropical island feel without looking too ‘Balinese’.

Who we couldn’t have done it without: Our wedding Planner Anastasia – Wonderland Bali. From our first conversation I felt at ease and she really understood our style. She truly made my vision come to life.

Advice for future Bali Brides: Trust your planner and be open to professional opinions. Stay positive and don’t sweat the small stuff.

Our Wedding Day…

Wedding Planner/Stylist:

Wonderland Bali – I fell in love with their Instagram images and knew they would understand my style. From the first time we spoke to the end of the wedding day everything was so easy with my simple direction. Communication was always clear with fast responses. She thought of every small and big detail which made it so simple and enjoyable throughout the planning. I went with all of her recommendations and was never let down.

Flowers/Florist:

Hair & Make-up:

From home: Graceful Faces MUA (Sister) – Jessica Augimeri MUA (friend) Wish Hair Studio (Mariah)

Photography:

Terralogical – Govinda INCREDIBLE! I had been following Govinda on Instagram for months before and I loved his eye for simple detail. He is very creative with his photos and I didn’t want ‘typical’ wedding photos. I wanted more ‘editorial/arty’. Not only did he nail the brief we had all our photos back within a week!!

Videography:

Leura Film – I saw they work with Govinda a lot and thought it’s important to have a team that have a similar style and know each other’s work well. Between all the photographers and videographers they were so professional and we hardly knew they were there for most of the time.

Favours:

Personalized wooden fans from Etsy.

Celebrant:

Married by Kristy – (Perth). A major highlight!! The first thing my guests said to me after our ceremony was how amazing she is. I feel like I have known her a lifetime after the first time we met. Kristy’s smile and bubbly personality is infectious. She has so much to offer and literally thinks of everything and everyone to make it a comfortable and fun setting. She made us feel so relaxed and really tapered our ceremony to be personal and true to us. It’s like she was just sharing our own love story to our nearest and dearest.

Catering:

Saigon Street. We went to our tasting at their restaurant a few months before and we couldn’t fault a dish. Saigon St came as a recommendation from Anastasia and she chose the courses she thought we would like and we didn’t change one. It was such tasty, fresh and colorful food. We had personalized cocktails which the guests loved and are still talking about. The staff on the night were also very friendly and professional. Our future visits to Bali will always include a visit to the restaurant. Highly recommend!

Cake/Dessert:

Donut wall from Butter Bali

Stationery/Invitations:

Etsy.

Wasn’t needed as everything was in one spot and all guests stayed close by.

The final part…

Where did you find your styling inspiration for your Bali wedding?

I literally browsed Instagram for hours! Pretty much everything I chose from the venue to my dress I had discovered on there. I’m not a huge fan of colour so I always knew our styling would be only whites and fresh greens with simple but effective details. Working in the hair industry I always knew I wanted modern, yet classic beauty looks so our pictures wouldn’t ‘date’ too much.

What was the hardest part about planning a destination wedding?

I honestly didn’t find anything hard about ‘planning’. Between emails and internet banking I don’t think it’s much different to planning a wedding at home. We did take one specific trip to pick certain things in person and meet our planner. The one downside overall is understanding there will be many loved ones that cannot make your big day. There were so many important family members that were not able to travel at this time and as much as we completely understand we wish we could have had everyone there.

Why did you choose Bali as your wedding destination?

Jai took me on my first holiday to Bali when we were 18. We have had countless trips since and we love everything about it. It’s a magical place that can be any kind of holiday you want it to be. Without a conversation between us we were both already set on a Bali wedding and we didn’t question it once .We didn’t want a traditional or formal day, we just wanted a fun celebration at an amazing venue with good food & drinks. Also having a holiday at the same time with all of our friends and family was a huge bonus!

How did you stay organised while planning a destination wedding?

With planning our wedding in only 7 months it was easy to keep track financially and communicate with all suppliers being close to the wedding. I didn’t keep a diary or wedding journal just simple notes and reminders all in my iPhone. I left most of the organising up to my planner and she would keep me on track. I never felt stressed or unsure at any stage of planning, being a pretty relaxed and easygoing bride made it all more enjoyable.
